Media-for-equity, sometimes abbreviated M4E, is a financing model where startups trade equity in exchange for advertising space provided by media companies.
Though this model has been in play since the 20th century, it is only in recent years that it has seen a boom. For B2C companies, it presents a cost-efficient way to increase brand awareness; while media conglomerates often see a reliable return on investment thanks to increased consumer demand and sales driving higher valuations.
